The One that killed St. Valentine
I was alone with my thoughts wondering how much had gone down in a short period of time, I had been terribly ill, I had partied, I had met too many guys, I had let go of some already… lolz. There,I was in my room, reminiscing on these events past and pondering those to come. I
had spoken to Funmi earlier about helping her buy a Valentine ’s Day gift for
Afolabi.
She
is all loaded and loud like its rapture on that day. Why does everyone around
town make such a ruckus out of the day and I don’t? Some
have been saving up, some have been planning break ups, while some are actually
dreading the day cause they are in serious relationships with more than one
person, yep!..everyone with their logs, you either lumber or slumber. *sigh*
A
knock on the door distracted me from the motion pictures in my head; it was
Funmi with a sour looking facial expression. Impatiently, we headed to my room
to discuss her worries. Her cousin was the matter this time, weighing on her
shoulder like a throne. Apparently, her cousin met this guy late last year and
things have been going on smoothly, getting to know each other and hanging out
had been real fun, the guy asked her out already but she said they should get
to know each other well before rushing into any serious relationship. She
decided to say yes beginning of this year and things have been going on
alright. Then some weeks to Val’s day he starts to act up like she did
something wrong and she’s worried because the relationship is still fresh as
dew.
Funmi
said; ‘am thinking he’s just acting like that because he doesn’t want to get
her a Val’ gift’, I replied; ‘but that shouldn’t be a problem, if they are
close enough they should have talked about this before Val’s day, it’s really
not compulsory, just obligatory; the gift can wait if the money is the
problem’, Funmi replies; ‘but she already got him a really nice {Swiss Quartz}
wrist watch and a 4TB Western Digital hard drive’, I interjected; Funmi why are
you getting over yourself here, it isn’t Valentine’s Day yet and it could be
anything. Funmi sighed whispered; ‘let’s keep our fingers crossed then’. We
headed out to go get Afolabi’s gifts after much gossiping; we decided to do the
Island first then back to the Mainland to wrap up.
We
went from shop to shop looking for the perfect Val’s gift, everywhere looking
all red, only a touch of green and it would be Christmas already!!. I wonder
how come just an ordinary day could mean so much to different people. We saw
different guys and babes going in cliques looking for the perfect item{s} as
well. While we were at the mall, we decided to window shop as well and see if I
could get a gift for myself. As I and Funmi entered a shop, I spotted these two
cute guys checking out gifts in the lingerie section and I thought to myself
‘how cute is this’, I smiled and looked away, we looked around for a bit then I
moved to pick one for myself in a different column, suddenly without eaves
dropping, I could overhear the guys discussing; 1st guy: ‘oh boy this
things looks really sexy, am thinking I should get the same color for my
girlfriends’, 2nd guy: ‘me am getting different colors oh’. They went on and on about how they were going to get laid by two different babes each on Val’s day and how their main babes are not even in town, so they would get to spend Val’s day with the ‘Priority’ girlfriend that weekend. Unconsciously, I shook my head in repugnance, picked a red lingerie and went to meet Funmi who already got a gift, but hadn’t finished buying. I told Funmi about what I heard, she chuckled and said; ‘my dear shit happens’, I replied; ‘I haven’t really been a big fan of this Val’s ish’. We went from shop to shop got all we wanted and we decided to chill for a drink and have something to eat. While chilling I noticed the mall was crowded than usual, people going out of shops with gift bags, both the married, single and gay, even Christmas gifts weren’t bought this much. We had our meal, rested for a while and left for home.
After
a whole days’ work, Funmi and I chilling in my room with crossed legs and
trying to the wrap items; I got a gift for my crush, thought a fancy pen would
help him sign blank cheques for me *lol*. Funmi left for home, I had a cold
bath and changed into something comfy, Laying on my bed and thinking back on
what we’d said and done today, I couldn’t stop wondering why Valentine isn’t so
overrated.
My view is that I’m sure some people will think am only saying this because am single but even when I wasn’t; with or without a gift, Val was really my thing because I’m a hopeless romantic like anyone but I would spend it indoors, light out, chilled room, under a duvet cuddling, watching romantic movies with a lot of junk food around me, better than a dinner in a fancy restaurant or any show because of the traffic caused by the throng of people at every nice spot. So why make a fuss about a day to splurge on your partner when you can always do that every day, my opinion, I think Valentine shouldn’t be the only day you shower your partner with gifts, love and attention, and you should make it an every other day kinda thing so much that even if you forget Valentine he/she wouldn’t remember you did. I won’t let you guilt trip me into this person that killed St. Valentine for the purpose of justifying your own point of view I popped up and said; ‘Why overate Val when everyday is a lovers day’.
Valentine’s Day is a day born out of the selfless act of love by St. Valentine who wedded soldiers who were forbidden to be married. He also healed the daughter of his jailer called Asterius and before his execution wrote a poem titled ‘From your Valentine’. It shouldn’t just been about your partner alone than, show love to the less privileged {am sure they need the gift more}, the sad person next to you, a random person, someone in need. It’s not just about the gift alone, show love in the act of service, be really nice to someone you don’t even know, let someone have a reason to believe in Valentine’s Day as truly a lovers day regardless of gender, race, class etc. Without a selfless act, we won’t be remembered and our memories can’t resound across the halls of history.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all my Readers

I like your approach to this article. I was expecting some violence, perhaps some Chuck Norris cowboy shooting style. :D Good one. Thumbs up, Temmy.
And thanks for leaving us hanging with the Funmi's cousin story. I'm expecting a sequel on that. :D
